Demi-Permanent Hair Color Review

Coloring the hair is a great way to eliminate gray hairs, enhance the natural color, and to restore color to hair that is fading. There are several different types of hair color which vary in permanence including temporary hair dye, semi-permanent hair dye, demi permanent hair color, and permanent hair dye. Each type has unique purposes and can greatly change the color and appearance of hair. Hair dyes can be damaging so it is important to understand what type you are using and what it does to your hair. Since everyone's hair reacts differently to chemical treatments one type of hair dye may create entirely different results on you hair than it does on the next person's. Here is some information pertaining to use these hair dyes:

The length of time that coverage lasts in a demi-permanent hair dye is greater than that of a semi permanent dye but less than that of a permanent dye. Although a demi-permanent hair color is, in fact, a permanent dye it does eventually wash out. These colors contain alkaline agents like ethanolamine or sodium carbonate rather than ammonia. Demi-permanent dyes do contain developers, but the developers in this type of dye typically contain less hydrogen peroxide than that of a developer in permanent dye. The alkaline agents in these products are less damaging than those in permanent dyes because they aren't as capable of removing the hair's natural color. This means that your actual hair does not lighten during the coloring process, therefore, you will not be able to go a lighter shade with a demi-permanent dye.

Although demi-permanent dyes can cover grays more than semi-permanent dyes they aren't as effective in hiding grays as permanent hair colors. Since the natural pigment of hair is not removed during the coloring process, the color doesn't result in solid block color which makes them look more natural. They are also much safer and do not create nearly as much damage as a permanent dye. If you hair is already damaged, demi-permanent hair colors are probably the best way to go. These dyes are created to wash out in approximately 20 to 28 shampoos. This means the color can last for months, but regrowth will not be as apparent and you can easily change your hair to a different color after it has washed out. Even though the color eventually washes out it is important to remember that the color may last longer than it says on the packet, especially if you choose a darker shade. If you put any color on bleached hair it is typically more difficult to get out.

If you are unsure about changing your hair color or if you tend to change your hair color often demi-permanent dyes may be the best option for you. If you are using other chemical treatments on your hair you should try to avoid harsh permanent dyes and stick with a gentler version of hair color. If you are looking for a gentle, effective demi-permanent hair color take a look at the products offered by Clairol and Wella.
