The purpose of a curling iron is to create curls or waves in
the hair using heat. There are three different types of curling irons on the
market. One is geared towards the salon
professional and the other two are easily used by the average person.
Here are the different types - Spring Curling Iron: Spring curling irons are the most popular and inexpensive curling iron available on the market. Usually purchased by non professionals, these curling irons are the most user friendly of the three types. There is a small spring that automatically closes the clamp on the barrel and then you manually open the clamp using a convenient thumb lever.

- Marcel Curling Iron: These irons are very popular among professionals but are very difficult to use until you have become accustomed to it. They require you to open and close the clamp with the use of several fingers. Also, the handle also spins so you can rotate the curling iron without the use of both hands, making them perfect for the salon atmosphere.

- Clipless Wand Curling Iron: Clip-Less Wand Irons don't contain a clamp. Instead the user manually wraps each hair strand around the heated barrel. They are very easy to use and give great results. Also, most come with a heat resistant glove to help protect your hands from burns.

Remember the type of curling iron effects the results very little. Barrel type and size is what determines the end results. For large loose curls purchase a large barrel (1 1/2" - 2 1/2") and for small tight curls try a smaller barrel (5/8" - 1").
